Priority populations, including Aboriginal, CALD, and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, are disproportionately affected. Many adolescents in the Growing Healthy Kids service already show comorbidities, including prediabetes (75%) and abnormal lipid profiles (52%). Although the program shows clinical benefits, there is limited research on adolescents’ experiences, particularly in priority populations.

Aim: This study aims to explore adolescents’ perspectives on their experiences with Growing Healthy Kids (GHK), a multidisciplinary weight management service, evaluating their overall satisfaction and identifying areas for improvement in service delivery, acceptability, and effectiveness.

Method: A qualitative study using semi‑structured interviews explored the perspectives of adolescents living with obesity who received care through the GHK service. Interviews were conducted between July 2022 and July 2023 by a non‑treating clinician, either face‑to‑face or by telephone, with written consent obtained beforehand. Interviews were audio‑recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed thematically in NVivo by three independent researchers. Ethics approval was granted by the SWSLHD Human Research and Ethics Committee.

Results/findings: A total of 22 adolescents were interviewed. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed four key themes: (i) initial experiences and feelings, (ii) perceptions of service delivery, (iii) impact of the service, and (iv) recommendations for improvement.

Conclusion: This study emphasises the benefits of multidisciplinary, tailored interventions that meet the unique needs of adolescents in weight management services. It identifies emotional challenges such as anxiety and judgment, highlighting the importance of clear communication, empathetic care, and supportive environments. Participants expressed a need for long‑term support, flexible appointment options, and access to resources such as gym equipment. These findings suggest that extending access to services and offering adaptable care can enhance effectiveness and support positive health outcomes.

Implications for children and families: You told us you feel more comfortable and supported when you meet clinicians face‑to‑face, in a safe and non‑judgmental space where your needs are listened to, and when appointments fit better around school and daily life.

Implications for practitioners: You can improve your service by providing person‑centred, face‑to‑face care, giving clear information before the first visit, and offering flexible, longer‑term support that aligns with adolescents’ preferences and helps improve their health and well-being.

Keywords: adolescent, perspective, experience, obesity, weight management, service delivery, multidisciplinary

This presentation relates to the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being

Shen Meei Chia, NSW Health, Australia;
