Yarning Circles

These virtual gatherings via Zoom will be facilitated to provide an opportunity for participants to expand on their experiences of the presentations relating to each conference theme. One of the aims is for participants to collaborate and hopefully begin new research journeys, or to continue and grow existing collaborations.

What is yarning?

Yarning is one way First Nations knowledges are shared and transmitted among First Nations Peoples and across generations.

Yarning is grounded in the intellectual traditions of Australia’s First Nations peoples. Yarning continues to be used and valued today in a range of contexts, including education, healthcare, and research. Yarning and oral storytelling might be accompanied by visual or performance artforms.

Yarning circles are places to share and listen to each other’s stories. While we will gather via Zoom for our CVC2026 Yarning Circles, rather than in a traditional circle formation, our sharing, listening, and collaborating can still be guided by yarning principles and protocols. We can engage in these protocols of listening to each other and sharing key moments from the presentations we have engaged in. We show respect by giving time for everyone to share if they want to and engage in deep listening to each other. Then when we share, we can build on each other’s thoughts and ideas, share new thoughts and ideas, and engage in a shared dialogue grounded in deep listening.

1.9.26 5pm Tuesday AEST / Sydney time	Register Here	Children’s Rights, Voices and Perspectives Yarning Circle	Aligning with the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), children express themselves and interact with their world in a myriad of ways. We learn from children about issues that matter. Join an interactive discussion as we yarn about how we can uphold children’s rights, voices and perspectives. Let’s gather to share insights, exchange ideas and learn from each other. The session will be facilitated by conference organisers. .
2.9.26 9am Wednesday AEST / Sydney time	Register Here	Children’s Inclusion Yarning Circle	Children’s inclusion is grounded in a powerful commitment: every child belongs. Join an interactive discussion as we yarn about research on barriers to inclusion and transformative approaches that promote equity, dignity and belonging for all children. The session will be facilitated by conference organisers.
2.9.26 5pm Wednesday AEST / Sydney time	Register Here	Children’s Communication Yarning Circle	Children with speech, language, and communication needs benefit when professionals work together to support their participation and inclusion. Join an interactive discussion with a diverse group of professionals including speech-language pathologists, educators, audiologists and interpreters, as we yarn about ways to enhance children’s strengths and reduce participation barriers. The event will be hosted by conference organisers.
3.9.26 9am Thursday AEST / Sydney time	Register Here	Children’s Health and Disability Yarning Circle	Join an interactive discussion as we yarn about diverse research perspectives on supporting children's physical and mental health and wellbeing. Drawing on research that supports children, families, and communities, participants we will discuss ways to improve access to and experiences of high-quality healthcare. The discussion will consider inequalities in healthcare access and participation, particularly for children who are marginalised within healthcare systems and practices. Perspectives of children with disability will also be explored. The session will be facilitated by conference organisers.
3.9.26 11am Thursday AEST / Sydney time	Register Here	Children’s Learning and Activities Yarning Circle	Join an interactive discussion as we yarn about presentations related to children’s learning and activities. Consider research that advances opportunities for children to flourish through their learning, play and engagement in child friendly and child-led activities. The event will be hosted by conference organisers.
3.9.26 1pm Thursday AEST / Sydney time	Register Here	Children’s Workforce and Policy Yarning Circle	Adults who work with children (including educators, health and allied health professionals), media, and government are working towards workforce sustainability, interdisciplinary practices and transformation of the social policy, and organisational conditions that enable social justice. Let’s gather to share successes, exchange ideas and learn from each other. The session will be facilitated by conference organisers.
